In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (the most common kind), the stomach is made smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach using surgical staples or a plastic band. The smaller stomach is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine.

Gastric bypass surgeries may cause what is known as the “dumping syndrome.” This happens when food moves too rapidly through the stomach and intestines. Symptoms include nausea, weakness, sweating, faintness, and sometimes diarrhea shortly after eating. These symptoms are much more severe when the person has eaten highly refined, high-calorie foods, especially sweets.

There are a number of weight loss pounds conditions that have to be met before a doctor can perform Gastric bypass.  For instance, the person has to have been obese for at least 5 years.  He or she cannot have an ongoing problem with alcohol or have untreated depression.  Most candidates are between 18 and 65 years old.

Most people who have gastric bypass surgery quickly begin to lose weight.  They tend to continue to lose weight for up to 12 months. One study showed that most patients will lose about one-third of their original body weight in 1 to 4 years.  However, if the recommended diet is not followed properly, the patient can begin to stretch their stomach and weight may be regained.

If you’re a teenager looking for weight loss plans for teens, then you’re no doubt in a very difficult moment of your life.  The trick for success in losing weight is to understand and accept that whatever plan you decide is for you, then your success will not happen over night.  So it’s important to be realistic and not set yourself up for a frustrating fall.

Do you want to go on a Ketosis diet?  Several popular diet plans are based on this principle.  Adkins and South Beach are both diets which restrict carbs.  This results in a ketosis diet.

The theory behind a ketosis diet is that your body will burn fat rather than carbohydrates if you deprive it of almost all carbohydrate sources.  This means limiting your carb intake to just 20 grams in some cases.

Normally, the carbohydrates in food are converted into glucose. The glucose is then transported through the body and is particularly important in fuelling the brain. However, if there are very little carbs in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. Thus, the body produces ketone bodies—a state known as ketosis.

Low Carb diets take advantage of this state of ketosis.  Since cells in the body can use ketones for energy instead of glucose, and since ketones are easier to produce, only a small amount of glucose is created.  In other words, ketosis is the more significant process in this case. Diets low in starches and sugars do not directly affect blood sugar levels significantly, meals tend to have little direct effect on insulin levels.  These diets tend to discourage insulin production in general.

Additionally, many experts argue that a ketosis diet is more like the diet our bodies have evolved to use.  Prior to the advent of agriculture just a few thousand years ago, the human body had millions of years of evolution which selected for a hunter gather lifestyle.  Hunter gatherers had very few carbs in their diets.  They may have had the original ketosis diet.

Dr. Robert Adkins first published the Adkins Diet Revolution in 1972 which set off the modern round of low carb dieting.  At the time, its appeal was limited because so many scientists and doctors condemned it.  Over time, though, it gained credibility and when he republished the book as Dr. Adkins New Diet Revolution, it set off a frenzy.

Soon other ketosis diet books appeared.  These included the popular South Beach diet, Zone diet, and Protein Power.

While the scientific community still hasn’t acknowledged the value of the ketosis diet, they have started to make recommendations that people reduce the amount of carbohydrates in their diets.  The medical community has stressed the importance of fiber in diets and recommended that children not drink juice on a regular basis.

While the popularity of ketosis diets has waned since it’s height in 2004, there are still many adherents.  That’s because, for many people, low carb diets work when nothing else has before.

There has been much scientific research on low carb diets.  There are many studies which show it works and many studies which show that it is dangerous.  Because of these competing studies, advocates on both sides can pull up evidence that they are right.

Once you do your due diligence, you will be better able to decide whether to pursue a ketosis diet.

Do you know how to lose pounds fast?  Perhaps you have a “big day” like a wedding or a high school reunion coming up and you want to look your best.  Or, you want to get a jump start on a long term diet by shedding pounds to get you motivated.  Whatever your reason, here’s how to lose pounds fast.

I’m going to share with you two programs that show you how to lose pounds fast.  Neither of these programs are suitable for long term sustained weight loss, but both can help you meet temporary goals.

The first diet is alternatively known as the “Mayo Clinic Diet” or the “Grapefruit Diet.”  You should know that the Mayo Clinic has said they had nothing to do with developing the diet and that they do not endorse it.

This diet claims that the specific combination of foods you eat, particularly the grapefruit, will activate your metabolism.  It’s likely though that the real trick to this diet though is that it is calorie restricted.

This “how to lose pounds fast” diet consists of 2 slices of bacon, 2 eggs, half a grapefruit and coffee for breakfast.  For lunch, you’ll have another grapefruit half along with as much salad and lean meat as you want.  At dinner time, you can have meat or fish and non-starchy vegetables as well as the mandatory half grapefruit.  Right before bed, drink 8 ounces of milk or vegetable juice.

Do not deviate from the diet plan.  That means you should eat everything listed (including the bacon and the salads) but add nothing (particularly carbs) to it.  You shouldn’t be hungry on the diet because you can eat the salads, meats, and vegetables until you are full.  However, you shouldn’t stuff yourself.  You also shouldn’t eat between meals.

Stay on the Grapefruit diet for 12 days.  If you want to continue with it, take a 2 day break before repeating the cycle.  You should be able to lose 10 pounds in the 12 days.

Another diet that shows you how to lose pounds fast is the Cabbage Soup Diet.  On this diet, not surprisingly, you eat a lot of cabbage soup.  The basic recipe is a vegetable soup broth filled with lots of cabbage and any other non-starchy vegetables you wish.

The Cabbage Soup diet is a seven day program on which you should be able to lose 5 or more pounds.  Each of the seven days has a specific food combination to follow.  For instance, on one day you can have all of the vegetables you want plus a baked potato.  Another day brings all of the bananas you can eat and all of the milk you can drink.  Another day lets you eat up to 16 ounces of beef.  The nice thing about the Cabbage Soup diet is that you can eat the soup any time you are hungry.

If you want to do multiple cycles of the Cabbage Soup diet, do one week on and one week off.

Are you looking for a flat abs diet?  Do you want to have a six pack (guys) or completely flat stomach (gals)?  Is the belly fat holding you back on your fitness program?  Here’s some tips for a flat abs diet.

First of all, make sure that you are getting enough fiber in your diet.  Fiber comes only from plant sources.  You cannot get fiber from meat or fat.  The best form of fiber for your flat abs diet comes directly from fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Processed food takes much of the fiber out of foods.  For instance, a medium baked potato (with skin) has 3.8 grams of fiber.  But, if you make scalloped potatoes from a box, you will get less than 1 gram.  So, try to have fresh and not processed foods.

You need at least 25 grams of fiber on a flat abs diet.

Next, you want to balance your carbs.  You need carbohydrates for energy, so you don’t want to eliminate them as you would in diets like Adkins.  But, you also do not want to have too many because that breaks down into glucose which further breaks down into fat.  The ideal range of carbs is 45 to 65 percent of your daily calories.

Protein should make up between 15 and 20 percent of your calories.  You need protein to build lean muscle mass.  Also make sure that fats from all sources make up no more than 25 percent of your daily diet.

You should drink plenty of water.  Some people believe that if they drink a lot of water they will bloat.  This is a mistake.  You will lose all of the water you drink through perspiration and urination.  However, the water will take with it the sodium in your body.  The sodium is what actually causes you to bloat.

Speaking of which, if you want a good diet for abs, you have to limit the sodium.  Most people need around 500 mg. of sodium a day for their bodies to function.  The American Heart Association recommends that people place an absolute cap on sodium at 2400 mg.  Yet, the majority of Americans get between 3000 and 6000 mg. a day.  That’s just way too much.  Part of the problem stems from shaking salt onto food.  But, much of the problem comes from processed foods.  Processed foods use salt for both taste and shelf stability.  Just like with fiber, a flat abs diet will rely on fresh, not processed foods.

Another thing to consider when doing a flat abs diet is reducing or eliminating “fizzy” drinks like soda.  Pop and spritzers increase bloating because the carbon dioxide trapped in the bubbles creates gas.  This slows your stomach down from emptying.

Limit or eliminate your consumption of alcohol and caffeine.  These are natural diuretics which increase fluid loss.  They do not replace your body fluids as effectively as water or juice which are the preferred beverages on the flat abs diet.

The last tip I have for you is to try to reduce the stress in your life.  Stress causes the hormone cortisol to act up.  Cortisol causes fat deposits around the organs in your abdomen.  Exercise is a great stress reliever, which has the added benefit of helping you to lose weight all over.

Diet slimming pills abound on the market.  Which ones are good and which ones should you forgo?  And, how can you tell if something is a scam?  This article will explore the real world of diet slimming pills.

Diet slimming pills are not tested or regulated by the federal government if they are sold as supplements and not medicines.  Basically, if you don’t have to get it for a pharmacist, it is not FDA approved.  But it’s not FDA disproved either.  This applies to supplements bought at a local drug store and ones bought over the internet.

Every six months or so, the media picks up on a new natural substance that seems to help with weight loss.  A few years back, that was Hoodia.  More recently it was Acai Berry.

Hoodia makes for a very interesting case study.  Bushmen in South Africa use a specific kind of hoodia and it makes them be able to live without food and with limited water for several days.  However, there are about 20 other kinds of hoodia.  The hoodia that the Bushmen use is not available for marketing in the west because there are very limited quantities.  South Africa is working on mass cultivation for weight loss purposes, but at this point it is not in any diet slimming pills.

That said, there are no limits on the number of supplements claiming they have the “correct” hoodia in them.  Many people who use these diet slimming pills are disappointed to find that they do not curb the appetite at all.

A more recent case study is the Acai Berry.  Many companies are advertising that Rachael Ray and Oprah have endorsed Acai Berry.  While both have run segments on the nutritional benefits of the actual fruit, they have not endorsed any of these diet slimming pills.  In fact, the supplements which claim to be Ray and Oprah endorsed often have only minute traces of the fruit in them and certainly not enough to have any real dieting help.  They do, however, have a lot of caffeine in them which can be harmful to some people.

Hoodia, Acai Berry, and other kinds of supplement products are notorious for poor customer service.  The Tuscon Better Business Bureau has received more than 150 complaints against just one company that sells Acai Berry, most related to billing.

One thing to watch for with these diet slimming pills is free trial offers.  This is a bait and switch.  Usually, the trial starts the day you order the product not the day you receive it.  You may receive your pills on day 12 of a 14 day trial offer.  If you don’t ship them back immediately, you will be billed the full amount.  It is generally better to bite the bullet and fork out the entire amount up front if a supplement looks like it might be a good thing rather than sign up for a continuity program that has a free trial period.

Ultimately, you have to decide whether a diet slimming product is right for you.  Just don’t believe everything you see in advertising.

The most important thing you need to know about calories & weight loss is that you need to burn 3500 more calories than you take in to lose 1 pound.  You can do this by exercising, dieting, or a combination of both.

The easiest way to break this down is to think of it on a daily basis.  You need to burn 500 more calories than you eat each day.

An inactive or lightly active man weighing 150 lbs, will burn roughly 2000 calories each day.  If he weighed 200 lbs, he’d burn around 2300 calories each day.  On the other hand, a 150 lbs. woman will burn about 1700 calories a day.

Why do men and women of the same weight burn different calories?  Most of it has to do with the fact that men have more muscle mass which allows them to burn more calories at rest.  This should also encourage you to put on muscle, whether you are a man or a woman.

So, going back to calories & weight loss, if you are a 150 pound woman and you don’t want to do any exercise, you need to eat no more than 1200 calories a day.

However, if you are willing to put in some work, you can eat a little bit more.  For instance, even housework can increase your eating ability.  Heavy cleaning burns 432 calories an hour.  Do that for 70 minutes a day and you’ll have your 500 calories.  Mowing the lawn for an hour (with a push mower) burns 324 calories an hour.  But there are fun ways to burn calories too.  An hour of singles tennis burns 549 calories an hour.  And, an hour of skiing burns a whopping 740 calories.

If you are serious about controlling calories, weight loss will follow.  One way to do this is to control your portion sizes.  Meals, both at home and at restaurants have been growing in size for decades.  For instance, in the 1930s, the average dinner plate size had an 8 or 9 inch diameter.  Now, the average diameter is 10 to 12 inches.  Switch to salad plates for dinner and watch the pounds disappear.

It’s no secret that restaurant portions have grown.  For instance at Romano’s Macaroni Grill, a seemingly good for you Teriyaki Salmon dinner has a whopping 1240 calories.  If you are eating out, either split the meal with someone else or ask for a take home box at the start of the meal.  Then, place half of the food in the take home box before you start eating.  That way you can still “clean your plate” without taking on the additional calories.

The body colon cleanse is all the rage these days.  What is it and why is so important to clean out a certain part of your intestines?  Basically, you build up a lot of gunk in your system and this keeps you from losing weight.  The body colon cleanse helps you lose weight by cleaning your system out.

When you get up each morning that you are on the body colon cleanse, you need to do a salt water flush.  Mix two level teaspoons of unionized sea salt with a quart of lukewarm water and mix.  Drink this all right away.

Then in the evening you’ll want to take an herbal laxative tea which you can find in most grocery stores.

You should be prepared to need to use the restroom a lot while on the body colon cleanse.  Specifically, that means that you should be prepared to go every 15 or 20 minutes.  If you have a job or other activities that will not accommodate this need, you may want to consider putting the program off until you can use the facilities whenever you need to.

You may think that drinking only lemonade, saltwater and tea with no food for 10 days is dangerous.  Well, you are certainly not going to die on this diet, but you will be hungry.  Surprisingly, you will probably find that you have more energy as the diet goes on, despite the lack of food.

At the end of the body colon cleanse, you can expect to have lost anywhere from 5 to 10 pounds (this is mostly water weight and will be quickly regained if you don’t follow a reasonable eating and exercise plan), feel increased energy, have an increased desire to eat healthy foods, and feel somewhat different about life in general.

If the 3 day cardiac diet is one of the easiest and fastest ways to lose weight; so why haven’t you heard of it? The odds are good that you actually have already heard of it, or at least something very much like the 3 day cardiac diet, which has also been called the Birmingham Hospital diet.

This diet is one of a group of fairly similar diets that have been around for years, including the May Clinic Diet, the Grapefruit Diet, or the Cleveland Clinic diet. The purpose of all these diets is to enable a person to lose as much weight as possible in three days.

If you believe that the 3 day cardiac diet and diets like it came from these clinics, then the idea was to help cardiac patients lose the water weight and bloat before surgery. The institutions all deny that they originated these diets, but they are very effective at rapid weight loss.

You will find the 3 day cardiac diet is a high protein, limited calorie diet that emphasizes vegetables and lean protein. Because of the amounts of vegetable you’re encouraged to eat, there’s no risk of nutritional deficiencies arising, but you do need to make sure to only stay on it for three days at time, or the low calories will cause a metabolic slowdown.

For breakfast on each of the three days, you’re going to want to focus on getting in protein as well as some fats, so the usual prescription is water packed tuna or cottage cheese, about a half a cup’s worth, and two eggs, cooked in your preferred style.

This gives you a good mix of protein and fat, which are important for maintaining you hunger at manageable levels and giving you the materials you need to keep your muscles strong. Under no circumstances should you skip breakfast or not eat the full amount. You may have coffee or tea with it, but make sure not to use sweeteners or any dairy products.

Lunch will be a mixture of tuna and salad. On the first two days, you may have a half a cup of water packed tuna, and a salad of any size you like. Keep in mind, though, that the salad must be all vegetables – no cheese or croutons or the like.. Make sure to use olive oil as your dressing, and don’t skimp, you need the good fats for proper metabolism. On the third day of the 3 day cardiac diet you may increase to a full cup.

Dinner on the 3 day cardiac diet will consist of as much as you like of any kind of meat, prepared without sauce or breading. You need to back this up with two different types of vegetables, steamed and without sauce except for butter, which you should use on them.

Do not eat bread, pasta, or potatoes on the 3 day cardiac diet, because it will disrupt the weight loss formula of the diet. Remember to drink at least 64 ounces of water while on the diet, and don’t cheat, it’s only three days. Follow these rules and the 3 day cardiac diet will give you quick and easy weight loss.
